Funny movies, otherwise known as comedies, are films that are based on humor. They are made to entertain by making us laugh. Often times, they have feel good happy endings because people do not watch funny movies only to be sad at the end.
Comedies tend to focus on comedic stars, with many being former stand up comedians that have transitioned to the film industry because they are popular. Many people will watch funny movies just because their favorite comedian and or actors are in it. Everyone could use a good laugh. That being said, here is our review of the best funny movies for 2018 on DVD and Blu-Ray.
1. The Wedding Ringer
Doug Harris, played by Josh Gad, is a socially awkward, yet extremely lovable groom to be. His biggest problem is that he has no best man, and only two weeks to find one before he marries the girl of his dreams played by Kaley Cuoco. Enter Jimmy Callahan, played by Kevin Hart. He is the owner of Best Man, Inc, a company that supplies suave best men for socially awkward men in need. What results is an amazingly funny wedding charade as they try to pull it off, while an unexpected bromance forms between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.
From the time Amy, played by Amy Schumer, was young she had been taught that monogamy just is not realistic. Now as an adult she is a magazine writer, and lives by that theory. Amy enjoys a life free of boring, romantic, stifling commitment. Suddenly, she starts to fall for the subject of a new article she is writing about a successful, charming sports doctor played by Bill Hader. Amy begins to consider if committed couples may be onto something.
Mortdecai stars Paul Bettany, Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, and Gwyneth Paltrow. A debonair art dealer and part time rogue, Charlie Mortdecai, played by Johnny Depp, juggles the British Mi5, an international terrorist, and angry Russians as he races to recover a stolen painting that is rumored to contain a code that will lead him to lost Nazi gold.
Spy stars Jude Law, Raad Rawi, Melissa McCarthy, Miranda Hart, and Jessica Chaffin. Susan Cooper is an ordinary, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis.
5. Unfinished Business
Tired of playing second-fiddle to his obnoxious boss, played by Sienna Miller, businessman Dan Trunkman, played by Vince Vaughn, quits his job, and forms his own competing mineral sales firm. He takes a retiring associate, played by Tom Wilkinson, and a dim-witted sales applicant, played by Dave Franco, with him to the new company. After a year and a half of struggle, a promising deal is in sight, only to see it promptly fold, thanks to Dan’s ex-boss. Determined to save the deal, Dan and company fly to Germany, where a series of outrageous obstacles awaits.
6. The Good Dinosaur
The Good Dinosaur is an adorable animated film. Fortunately for young Arlo, his parents, voiced by Jeffrey Wright and Frances McDormand, and his two siblings, the mighty dinosaurs were not wiped out 65 million years ago. When a rainstorm washes poor Arlo, voiced by Raymond Ochoa, downriver, he ends up bruised, battered and far from home. Good fortune shines on the frightened little guy when he meets Spot, voiced by Jack Bright, a Neanderthal boy who offers his help and friendship. Together, the unlikely duo embarks on an epic adventure to reunite Arlo with his beloved family.
7. Inside Out
Inside Out is a heart felt animated film. Riley, voiced by Kaitlyn Dias is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Mid-western girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions are led by Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler. Joy guides her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness, voiced by Phyllis Smith, to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust.
Staring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro. Joy is a story of a family across four generations, centered on the girl who becomes the woman. Joy is played by Jennifer Lawrence who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Facing betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, Joy becomes a true boss of family and enterprise. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.
9. The Intern
The Intern stars Robert De Niro, and Anne Hathaway. Starting a new job can be a difficult challenge, especially if you’re already retired. Looking to get back into the game, 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro, seizes the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site. Ben soon becomes popular with his younger co-workers, including Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway, the boss and founder of the company. Whittaker’s charm, wisdom and sense of humor help him develop a special bond and growing friendship with Jules.
Sisters stars the comic duo Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler. When their parents place the family home on the market, siblings Maura, played by Amy Poehler, and Kate, played by Tina Fey, learn that they have one weekend to clean out the junk from their old bedroom. Unhappy with the news, the recently divorced Maura and her hotheaded sister make plans to throw one final bash to recapture their glory days with their former classmates. As the raging party begins to spiral out of control, the gals soon realize that there may not be a house left to sell once the dust settles.
A good comedy should make a person laugh out loud. There should not be too much drama tied into the main plot. The funniest movies always start off with a bang in the beginning, and leave you laughing when the credits are rolling. Sometimes a little nudity does not hurt as well.
